IBM recently announced the end of Software Support for IBM i (OS/400) V5R4, effective September 13, 2013. After that date, you will no longer be able to call IBM for software defect support with problems for IBM i operating system nor any of the IBM licensed programs. Operating business critical applications on a supported OS release is, for many customers, an audit or compliance requirement.
